Background
Chosen in January 1791 by George Washington to be the Capital
of the USA, the District of Columbia was planned by Pierre
Charles L'Enfant. More information about Washington
DC. There is no "J Street" in DC, due to the
similarity between "I" and "J". The Capitol
building was completed in 1819, rebuilt after being burned
by the British in 1814.
